PET Lab introduction:
Welcome to the SMU Positron Emission Computed Tomography Imaging Lab (SMU PET Lab). Our lab is dedicated to the development of PET imaging technologies for biomedical applications.
We are affiliated with the School of Biomedical Engineering, Southern Medical University, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Medical Image Processing, and the Guangdong Pazhou Laboratory.
Founded in late summer/early autumn of 2012 by Professor Lijun Lu, the lab has since received extensive support, including four grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), one project under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, one Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Program international cooperation project, four Guangdong Natural Science Foundation grants, one doctoral program fund project from the Ministry of Education, one Guangdong Provincial Quality Engineering university–industry joint laboratory project, and one Guangdong Provincial graduate-level model course project.
The lab has approximately 1,000 m² of dedicated research space and more than RMB 50 million worth of advanced research instrumentation, including a small-animal MR imaging system, a PHILIPS Micro-CT, a small-animal PET imaging system, a German iThera Medical photoacoustic tomography system, and the Verasonics Vantage 128 open multi-channel ultrasound research platform. Our group is also equipped with multiple CT and PET imaging systems and maintains close collaborations with several affiliated top-tier (Grade A, Class III) hospitals. Our partner institutions operate multiple whole-body PET-CT systems and can provide over ten thousand high-quality clinical imaging cases spanning oncology, neurology, cardiovascular disease, and other areas—offering a solid data foundation for AI model training, validation, and clinical translation.
Currently, our research focuses on cutting-edge directions such as medical imaging, artificial intelligence, virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and intelligent surgical navigation. We warmly welcome collaborations from academia and industry to jointly advance nuclear medicine PET imaging. Contact: lijunlu@gmail.com
